Event Recap
On Saturday August 25th, I attended the first day of Afropunk. Afropunk is an annual music festival held in the heart of Brooklyn at Commodore Barry Park. The annual music festival represents freedom and is a safe space for people to simply be themselves without judgement. Festival goers fully embrace this vision and express themselves through their creativity and through their outfits. The spirit of the festival is also retained by celebrating upcoming artists, budding entrepreneurs, and community initiatives. Saturday’s lineup of artists included Jessie Reyes, H.E.R, Kaytranada, Coco and Breezy, Miguel and more.
Here is a mashup of H.E.R’s and Miguel’s performances at Afropunk:
Alongside budding entrepreneurs, the Afropunk marketplace also included fun areas like the Hair Village where you could get your hair styled. Afropunk is not just a music festival but it is a safe place, a feeling and movement. It is a movement towards free expression and inclusion. My favorite part about the festival is seeing how people freely express themselves through their style.
Here are a few of interesting looks I’ve captured at Afropunk:
